Differin (Adapalene) is used as a treatment for acne vulgaris. Its active ingredient, Adapalene, is a type of retinoid which helps to unclog the pores and effectively treat blemishes on the skin, while at the same time preventing pores from becoming clogged. This helps to stop new spots and pimples from forming. Another benefit of treatment with Differin is that it can help with the natural exfoliation of the outer skin. In some cases, patients have used Differin to treat keratosis pilaris and other skin conditions.
Always use Differin (Adapalene) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
Differin (Adapalene) is applied topically to the affected area. In most cases, patients are told to apply Differin before going to bed. Prior to application, wash the face using a soap-free cleanser and gently dry the skin. Care should be taken to ensure that the gel does not get in the mouth, eyes or nose.
Treating acne or other conditions with Differin (Adapalene) may sometimes result in side effects, most of which occur during the first 2 to 4 weeks of treatment. Examples include:
Report any side effects to your doctor if you are worried. In some cases, severe reactions may occur. If you notice severe irritation, burning or any other signs of a serious reaction, consult your doctor immediately.
If you have a history of eczema, you must tell this to your doctor before starting treatment.
Using Differin (Adapalene) can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight, possibly resulting in sunburn. Patients are advised to avoid tanning booths and unnecessary exposure to the sun while using this gel.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
