Danogen (Danazol) has a variety of uses, including the treatment of endometriosis, symptomatic fibrocystic breast disease and hereditary angioedema. The active component in this medicine is sometimes called 17-alpha-ethinyl. It is a type of modified progestogen. When used as a treatment for endometriosis, it causes the endometrial tissue to become atrophic and inactive, leading to the treatment of endometrial lesions in most patients.
Danogen (Danazol) capsules are taken by mouth. These capsules are available in 50mg, 100mg and 200mg strength and your physician will tell you which one is most suitable for you. Female patients generally need to commence treatment during menstruation. Endometriosis may require a dosage which differs to that required for the treatment of breast fibrocystic disease, and hereditary angioedema in male or female patients is also treated with a different dosage. Your physician will decide the appropriate dosage required to treat your condition. There may be a need for regular blood tests throughout the course of treatment. If this is the case, ensure that you attend all scheduled medical visits.
While Danogen (Danazol) is being taken, there is a possibility of side effects. Some examples are provided here:
Discuss any side effects with your physician, and seek medical help if any reactions are persistent. There are significantly dangerous (but infrequent) side effects associated with this medicine. Patients will need hospitalization or emergency medical care if they notice any signs of speech related side effects, inflammation of the limbs, a prolonged erection (affecting male patients), coughing up blood, eye pain or any other serious side effects.
Due to the high risk of harm to a fetus, this drug is not to be taken during pregnancy under any circumstances. Use of non-hormonal contraception is also required, to ensure that pregnancy is effectively prevented.
Although quite uncommon, there have been cases of serious blood clots, liver problems and a dangerous increase in pressure on the brain caused by this medicine. Ask your physician about all of the risks associated with this drug prior to starting treatment.
