Cymbalta

Cymbalta (Duloxetine) is primarily used to treat symptoms of depression, however, it is also widely prescribed to treat peripheral neuropathy (nerve pain) affecting diabetic patients, or as a treatment for pain caused by conditions such as fibromyalgia, arthritis or chronic back pain, and some patients have even used it to treat stress urinary incontinence. This medicine belongs to a class of drugs called SNRIs (selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors), and its mode of action involves causing an increase in the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain, which may help to relieve depression or act on the nerve signals in the brain that help to prevent pain.

You must consult your physician before taking Cymbalta (Duloxetine) capsules. You will then be told by your physician how much you need to take. Adults taking this medicine to treat fibromyalgia may be prescribed an initial dose of 30mg (once per day) for the first week of treatment. After this, the dosage may be increased to 60mg per day, on the advice of a physician, however, this will not be required in all cases. The dosage regimen required to treat pain, depression, anxiety or any other conditions may be different, and in all cases, it is necessary to follow all instructions provided by your physician.

Side effects of Cymbalta (Duloxetine) can include:

• Sweating
• Uncontrolled shaking
• A reduced appetite
• An increase in urination
• Changes in sexual ability

You are advised to inform your physician if any side effects occur. In some cases, patients taking this medication may experience severe reactions. Immediately consult your physician if you notice weight gain, skin blisters, changes in vision, itchiness, weakness or any other symptoms of a serious reaction.

There is a risk that taking this medicine will cause suicidal thoughts. Discuss this with your physician before starting treatment.

You must not abruptly discontinue taking this drug (unless told to do so by a physician), as this may cause withdrawal symptoms. When treatment is being stopped, it may be necessary to gradually reduce your dosage.
