Clavulox (Amoxycillin/Clavulanic Acid) is a combination of amoxicillin (an antibiotic) and clavulanic acid, which is used to treat bacterial infections in pets such as cats and dogs. Certain enzymes (called beta-lactamase enzymes) can destroy the antibiotic before it has the chance to attack the bacteria. Clavulanic acid inhibits the activity of the beta-lactamase enzymes, thereby preventing antibiotic resistance, and allowing amoxicillin to act on the bacteria and treat the infection.
Vets commonly prescribe this medicine to treat animals for infections of the skin and soft tissue, including abscesses, wounds, cellulitis, pyoderma and periodontal infections caused by anaerobic and aerobic bacteria. In some cases, it may be prescribed to treat infections of the urinary tract in cats caused by certain bacteria.
Clavulox (Amoxycillin/Clavulanic Acid) is administered orally. Follow the directions provided by the vet and refer to the packaging for instructions on how to properly reconstitute the drops. The dosage required will be decided by the prescribing vet. Vets generally prescribe a dose of 6.25mg per pound (1ml per 10 pounds) of body weight (this is roughly the same as 12.5mg per kilogram or 1ml per 5kg), twice per day. Certain cases may require a higher dose than this. The length of time for which treatment is required can vary, depending on the seriousness of the infection, and the condition that requires treatment. Pet owners must follow all instructions given to them by the prescribing vet.
In some cases, pets treated with Clavulox (Amoxycillin/Clavulanic Acid) may experience side effects. You must bring your animal to a vet immediately if it is sick.
Once the solution has been reconstituted, it should be refrigerated. If the reconstituted solution has not been used after 10 days, it must be discarded.
This antibiotic medicine is a veterinary product, used to treat animals. It should never be taken by humans.
