Beselna Cream (Imiquimod) is used topically to treat condyloma acuminatum (genital warts) and it contains an active ingredient which is in a class of medicines known as immunomodulators. Its mode of action involves increasing the activity of the body`s anti-virus defenses and causing the immune system to release alpha interferon. This in turn leads to an immune system attack on the virus responsible for causing the warts (HPV or human papilloma virus), thereby leading to elimination of the warts. However, it will not cure the virus.
Other conditions for which this cream is indicated for include actinic keratoses (rough lesions on the skin caused by damage from the sun and its UV rays) and superficial basal cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer). When used for these conditions, it works by targeting the abnormal cells responsible for causing the cancer or keratoses. Other uses for which this cream has been studied include warts which have proven hard to treat, vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia and vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia, however, it is not usually prescribed for these conditions.
Physicians usually instruct adults using Beselna Cream (Imiquimod) for genital warts to apply a sufficient amount of cream to the warts 3 times a week. Generally, patients are told that application should take place prior to sleeping, and the cream should be allowed to remain on the skin while the patient is asleep. After waking up, it may then be washed off with a mild soap and water. Treatment will need to last for the entire duration of time recommended by your physician, and patients are normally told to stop application when the warts have been treated.
