Acitrom (Nicoumalone) is prescribed to people recovering from heart attacks and after heart surgery. It is an anticoagulant which thins the blood, and is used to prevent dangerous blood clots from forming in your lungs, veins, and other parts of your body.
How much you take and how often will depend on the strength of the Acitrom and your condition. Take strictly as directed by your physician. Do not alter your dose or suddenly stop taking Acitrom without consulting your physician, even if you are feeling better. If you do, your symptoms may get worse and increase the onset of unwanted side effects.
As with all medications, Acitrom has the potential to cause side effects in some patients. Common side effects of Acitrom include hypotension, shortness of breath, weakness, shock, abnormal swelling, headaches, and dizziness. If these symptoms worsen or persist, contact your physician.
Less common side effects of Acitrom include an allergic reactions, increased fatigue, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. If you experience any of these symptoms and they worry you, contact your physician.
Do not take Acitrom if you are allergic to it or to any of its ingredients.
Alcohol and products high in vitamin k (such as egg yolks, vegetable oil, liver, and leafy green vegetables) may interact adversely with Acitrom, so discuss with your physician your use of these substances before taking this medication.
