Acamprol (Acamprosate) is used to help reduce alcohol dependency in alcoholic patients who have decided to quit their addiction. Alcoholism can affect the chemicals in your brain by unbalancing them, and this drug does its job by restoring these chemicals to their former state. It is usually used in combination with counseling or behavioral modification techniques so the patient has the support needed to maximise the benefits of this medication.
In addition to helping recovering alcoholics this medication may also be prescribed by physicians to help treat mild to moderate renal impairment. Please note, this medication is not recommended for forms of substance dependency other than alcohol addiction.
Dosage will depend on the severity of your alcohol dependency. Therefore you should always consult your physician and strictly follow all directions provided.
As a general guide, patients will typically be advised to take Acamprol 2 tablets (333 mg) per dose, 3 times a day. If you experience stomach upsets after dosing it may help to dose alongside a light snack. Patients should begin taking this medication immediately after ceasing their alcohol consumption and continue even if they then relapse.
When you have been prescribed Acamprol for renal impairment, you will normally be advised to take 1 table of 333mg, 3 times a day.
