Zantac (Ranitidine Hydrochloride) is used for heartburn and acid indigestion. It can provide relief from symptoms of this condition, and is also effective at preventing heartburn caused by the consumption of certain foods and drinks. Patients suffering from conditions such as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and erosive esophagitis may also be told to take this medicine to treat their symptoms.
In some cases, it may be used on a short term basis or maintenance therapy for patients with duodenal ulcers or gastric ulcers. The active ingredient in this drug works by causing a reduction in the amount of stomach acid produced by the body, leading to relief from sour stomach and acid indigestion.
Zantac (Ranitidine Hydrochloride) tablets need to be taken as directed by your physician. Patients who are taking this medication to relieve symptoms are sometimes instructed to take one whole tablet, together with water. If it is being taken to prevent indigestion or other symptoms, the patient is normally directed to take one tablet alongside a glass of water, roughly 30 to 60 minutes prior to the consumption of food or drinks that can cause symptoms. In most cases, patients are told not to exceed 2 tablets in any period of 24 hours.
Treating stomach problems with Zantac (Ranitidine Hydrochloride) may cause side effects, such as:
Serious side effects are less common. However, you must tell your physician immediately if you notice visual problems, blistering on the skin, severe stomach pain or any other serious side effects.
If you have porphyria (a medical condition related to the blood) you must inform your physician before taking this drug.
If your symptoms persist or become worse, consult your physician.
