Valtrex

Valtrex (Valacyclovir) is used to treat the symptoms of genital herpes, shingles (herpes zoster) and cold sores. In some cases it may also be prescribed to treat chickenpox. The medicine is an antiviral medication that operates by inhibiting the growth of the herpes virus making it easier for the immune system to fight the symptoms of the infection. It should be noted that this treatment will not cure the infection but is only meant to control its symptoms.

Consult your physician before using Valtrex (Valacyclovir) to ensure the safest and most effective treatment. Adults treating the first episode genital herpes are often told to take 1g twice per day for 7 to 10 days. Treatment usually commences as soon as symptoms are noticed. A recurrent episode is often treated with 500mg, taken twice a day for a period of 3 days. Your individual dosage will be determined by the condition being treated, the severity of its symptoms, and your current health. The tablets should be swallowed whole and unaltered with a large glass of water. Do not change the form of the tablets to prevent unintentionally destroying or altering the effects of their contents.

Possible side effects of Valtrex (Valacyclovir) include:

• Depression
• Sore throat
• A blocked nose

Seek medical attention immediately if you notice blood appearing in the urine, itchiness, fever, changes in vision, severe stomach ache, or any symptoms of a severe reaction such as hives, swelling, or trouble breathing.

Do not begin using Valtrex (Valacyclovir) if you are allergic to acyclovir or valacyclovir. Also inform your physician if you have reduced liver or kidney function to prevent potential health problems from occurring.
