Risofos (Risedronate Sodium) for osteoporosis works by inhibiting the action of osteoclasts, substances which break down the bones. Other indications include Paget`s disease. Osteoporosis can occur as a result of the menopause, or else due to medical treatment with some types of medicine (such as corticosteroids). The main ingredient in this medication is classified as a bisphosphonate, and has been shown to trigger a decrease in bone resorption (the name given to the process in which the bones are broken down). Its therapeutic effects are achieved by binding to the bone and helping to block the removal of calcium. As a result of this, the osteoclasts are unable to break down the bones, which helps keep the bones stronger while also reducing the risk of fractures or breaks.
Risofos (Risedronate Sodium) is provided in tablet form, of which there are 3 different strengths available. These include 35mg, 75mg and 150mg versions. A calendar is provided on the pack, so as to allow you to keep track of which days you administer the medicine on. It is possible that your physician may direct you to take one 35mg tablet on the same day every week. However, if the 75mg strength version is being used, your physician may order you to take 1 tablet per day on the same consecutive 2 days of every month, for a total of 2 doses per month.
In cases where the 150mg strength version is being administered, the physician will tell you to take a single 150mg tablet on the same day every month. Physicians will most likely direct patients taking Risofos (Risedronate Sodium) to administer the tablet with a glass of water, first thing in the morning, 30 minutes before the consumption of any food. Avoid lying down for at least a half an hour after the tablet has been administered. In all cases, listen carefully to the instructions given by your physician and do exactly as told.
Should any side effects occur during treatment with Risofos (Risedronate Sodium) tablets, ensure that you promptly notify your physician. Possible reactions may include:
Patients should also take note of the fact that other side effects are possible. Go to see your physician immediately if you suffer from abnormal or new feelings of pain which affect the thighs or hip, persistent indigestion, pain in the joints which is severe, numbness, gum pain or any other severe adverse events which have not been referenced here.
Regular medical tests will be scheduled for patients taking this medicine, so as to ensure that the condition is being effectively treated. These may include bone mineral density tests.
Special dietary instructions, which may be related to the intake of calcium or certain vitamins may be provided by your physician. Ensure that you closely follow all directions given.
Although uncommon, there may be a risk of osteonecrosis affecting the jaw (loss of bone). Get medical attention immediately if any signs of this occur.
