Relenza (Zanamivir) is used to treat flu infections caused by the influenza A or B virus. Its mechanism of action is blocking the viral neuraminidase. These enzymes occur inside the virus and are required to trigger the release of the virus from its host cell. However, by disrupting this process, the virus is prevented from growing and the immune system is given the opportunity to fight off the infection and destroy the virus. In some cases, this medicine may be used for flu prevention (prophylaxis). Studies have also been conducted on this medicine to determine its effects if used to treat avian influenza (bird flu).
Relenza (Zanamivir) is provided in powder form for inhalation. The powder is contained in special rotadisks which contain blisters of the medicine. An inhalation device is also included for administering the medicine by means of oral inhalation. Your physician will conduct a full medical evaluation prior to the beginning of treatment so that the right dosage and required period of time that treatment is required for can be calculated. Patients will also be provided with details related to proper use of the inhaler. The dosage requirements can differ based on whether it is being used to treat an influenza infection or for prevention. Only take the amount your physician tells you to take.
Relenza (Zanamivir) may trigger side effects in some patients. See your physician if this occurs. Some of the reactions that have been reported by patients include:
The occurrence of severe adverse events will require the immediate attention of a physician. Get medical help straight away if you notice any severe symptoms.
Your physician may advise against using Relenza (Zanamivir) to treat or prevent flu if you are affected by asthma or any other related conditions, as it could increase the risk of bronchospasms.
This medicine will only offer protection against the flu if it is taken continuously and is therefore not considered to be a substitute for vaccination.
