Probenecid-AFT

Probenecid-AFT (Probenecid) is classified as a uricosuric medicine which works by allowing a higher amount of uric acid to be released in the patient`s urine. It is indicated for the preventative treatment of gout, and has also been used for patients affected by hyperuricemia. Gout attacks are extremely painful, and are caused by high levels of uric acid, which results in crystals forming in the joints.

However, by allowing the kidneys to remove uric acid from the body, this medicine may help to prevent gout attacks, but it is ineffective at treating acute or sudden gout attacks. In some cases, physicians may administer it alongside penicillin or other antibiotics for the treatment of infections, so as to increase the effectiveness of the antibiotics.

Probenecid-AFT (Probenecid) tablets are taken by mouth. Each one contains 500mg of the main ingredient. You will be required to adhere to the dosing schedule that your physician lays out, based on individual factors. Treatment will generally commence after the symptoms of an acute attack of gout have gone away, and not during an attack.

Should the attack occur during the normal course of treatment, the physician may consider allowing the patient to keep on taking it together with another type of medicine to treat the attack. Adults will usually be told by their physician to begin treatment with 250mg (half a tablet), administered twice per day for 1 week, after which the daily dosage is adjusted to 500mg twice per day. Do not exceed the dosage that your physician prescribes for you.

Side effects that occur during the course of treatment with the uricosuric medicine Probenecid-AFT (Probenecid) must be reported to a physician. Possible reactions could include:

• Headache
• Loss of hair
• Pain in the gums
• Frequent urination
• Reduction in appetite

You will be required to immediately consult a physician if you suffer from bloody urine, gout symptoms which become worse, pain affecting the back or side which is serious, soreness when you urinate, swelling of the limbs or any other severe adverse events which have not been referenced here.

Your physician may place restrictions on certain types of food or drinks during treatment with Probenecid-AFT (Probenecid) tablets. Certain activities may also need to be avoided.

Patients may be called in to visit a physician regularly for blood or urine tests, so as to make sure that the medication is not contributing to any damaging effects on your health.
