Motivyst (Canagliflozin) is used to treat type 2 diabetes in adult patients along with the diet and physical exercise to improve glycemic control:
It is recommended to take Motivyst (Canagliflozin) by mouth, preferably before breakfast. The standard prescribed dose is usually 100 or 300mg taken once a day.
When Motivyst (Canagliflozin) is used as an addition to insulin therapy and treatment with insulin-increasing drugs (such as sulphonylureas), the doses of the above mentioned medications may be reduced to avoid the risks of hypoglycaemia.
If a patient missed the dose, the medication has to be taken as soon as possible; however, the double dose of the medication should not be taken within one day.
The data about adverse reactions, recorded during Motivyst (Canagliflozin) clinical trials with the incidence of more than 2%, is presented for every organ system, according to the frequency of occurrence: very common, common, infrequent, rare. The data includes both monotherapy and combination therapy with metformin, metformin and sulphonylureas, as well as metformin and pioglitazone.
Gastrointestinal tract: common - constipation, thirst (polydipsia), dry mouth.
Kidneys and urinary tract: common - polyuria and pollakiuria (increase in the volume of the produced urine, nycturia), urinary urgency, urinary tract infections (cystitis and kidney infections), urosepsis.
Reproductive system and mammary glands: common - balanitis and balanoposthitis (balanitis candida and genital mycotic infections), vulvovaginal candida (vulvovaginal mycotic infections, vulvovaginitis, as well as vulvitis and genital mycotic infections), and vaginal infections.
Other adverse reactions, which were recorded in placebo-controlled Motivyst (Canagliflozin) studies with the incidence of less than 2%, were adverse reactions related with the intravascular volume reduction (postural vertigo, postural hypotension, arterial hypotension, dehydration, and fainting); hypoglycaemia when used in combination with insulin or insulin-increasing agents; changes in the laboratory test values (such as elevated serum potassium, serum creatinine, serum urea, low-density lipoprotein, and hemoglobin, as well as decreased serum uric acid); skin rash and hives.
