Cosopt (Timolol Maleate/Dorzolamide Hydrochloride) is the combination of a topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitor and a topical beta-adrenergic receptor blocking agent. These work together to reduce the amount of pressure in the eye. This medication increases the flow of fluids out of the eye and lowers the production of this fluid to relieve intraocular pressure. This pressure is a major risk factor in the cause of optic nerve damage and glaucomatous visual field loss. The higher the level of intraocular pressure, the greater the likelihood of glaucomatous field loss and optic nerve damage.
Strictly use Cosopt (Timolol Maleate/Dorzolamide Hydrochloride) as prescribed and follow all instructions provided by your doctor. Safe, suitable, and optimum dosage can vary and is dependent on the patient`s health and medical history, as well as the condition you are treating.
Be sure to ask your doctor about the correct procedure for taking Cosopt. A typical application involves tilting the head back and pulling down the lower lid of the eye to be treated. Put one drop into the pouch formed by the lid and slowly close the eye to spread the medication. Keep the eye closed for one minute to let the drop be absorbed. Apply pressure to the inside corner of the eye with a finger to prevent the medication from draining into the tear duct. If another application is needed, wait at least one minute before using again.
