Ciloxan Eye Drops (Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride) is indicated for conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers which have been caused by susceptible microorganisms. The main ingredient in this ophthalmic solution is classified as a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, and it is known to exhibit antibacterial effects against many gram positive and negative ocular bacteria. Its mechanism of action is affecting a type of enzyme called DNA gyrase, which the bacteria require if they are to synthesize DNA and grow. Local application allows for the treatment of the infection and eventual recovery of the patient.
Ciloxan Eye Drops (Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride) is provided as a 0.3 per cent strength solution, meaning that every ml contains 3mg of the active ingredient. Follow your physician`s instructions regarding the frequency of administration. Patients treating corneal ulcers may be directed by their physician to instill 2 drops into the eye that is affected, every 15 minutes for a 6 hour period. After this, 2 drops should be instilled at 30 minute intervals for the rest of the day. On day 2, the patient may be told to instill 2 drops every hour. For day 3 to 14, 2 drops are placed into the eye at 4 hour intervals. The physician will decide if treatment needs to continue beyond this. The dosage regimen for some other ocular infections is different to that listed above, and patients will need to listen carefully to their physician`s instructions.
Applying Ciloxan Eye Drops (Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride) to the eyes as a treatment for infection or corneal ulcers could lead to some side effects. Report all reactions to your physician. Some reactions which may occur include:
There are also other adverse events which may occur. If you notice signs of serious inflammation, severe burning, changes in eyesight, oozing, crusting or any other severe side effects, go to see your physician as soon as you possibly can, to ensure that you get all the necessary treatment.
Ciloxan Eye Drops (Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride) are only intended for ophthalmic use. Do not ingest the solution or apply it to any other areas of the body. Use only as directed by your physician.
It is essential that patients thoroughly wash the hands prior to instilling the drops so as to reduce the risk of contamination or infection.
