Apoquel (Oclacitinib Maleate) is used to relieve sever itching in dogs caused by allergic dermatitis and control of atopic dermatitis. It works by inhibiting pruritogenic cytokines, pro-inflammatory cytokines and cytokines involved in allergy that are dependent on JAK1 or JAK3 enzyme activity. Apoquel is not a corticosteroid. Apoquel is not an anthistamine.
Apoquel is offered in two dosages 3.6mg and 16mg. Each dosage is offered in a pack of 10 tablets.
The dosage your dog requires will depend on its body weight. A starting dosage of 0.18 and 0.27 mg of oclactinib per lb of body weight twice daily for up to 14 days is is often prescribed. After this, a maintainence dose of 0.18 and 0.27 mg per day is given.
The most common side effects of Apoquel are vomiting and diarrhea. Other reported side effects are lethargy, anorexia, skin irritation or infection, and ear irritation or infection.
Apoquel is only for dogs 12 months or older. Apoquel should not be taken by dogs with serious infections.
Apoquel can increases susceptibility to infection including demodicosis and neoplasia.
Apoquel is for use in dogs only. It is not to be used by other pets or by humans.
