Apo-Ipravent Nasal Spray (Ipratropium bromide) relieves rhinorrhea (a runny nose) caused by colds and allergies, and it works by inhibiting the action of the receptors that produce mucus. Although it can ameliorate the secretion of mucus from the nose when these symptoms are caused by the common cold and seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever), it will not relieve sneezing or a blocked nose caused by these conditions. This medicine is classified as an anticholinergic agent. Medical research showed that it can block the activity of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that is released in the body which plays a central role in the production of nasal mucus.
It achieves this effect by acting locally in the nose and blocking the receptors that acetylcholine acts on. This in turn serves to lessen the secretion of mucus from the nasal mucosa and the glands present there. As a result of this, the nose dries up and rhinorrhea can be reduced. Medical studies have taken place in which leading experts examined its effects if used to control either perennial non-allergic or allergic rhinitis and rhinorrhea associated with this condition.
Apo-Ipravent Nasal Spray (Ipratropium bromide) comes as a 0.03 per cent strength formula. Each metered spray delivers 21mcg of the medicine directly to the nose. There is a total of 30ml provided in each bottle, which is equivalent to 345 sprays. Your physician will assess your symptoms and calculate the dosage accordingly. Adults treating a persistent runny nose are sometimes told to administer 2 sprays (equal to 42mcg) into each nostril, 2 to 3 times each day.
Prior to application, you must blow your nose so as to clear out any possible mucus that may be there. Patients must also note that the most effective dosage will be dependent on their own response to the medicine, and as everybody responds differently to medicine, the frequency of administration and dosage schedule could vary slightly from patient to patient. Full compliance with your physician`s instructions will be necessary throughout the entire duration of treatment.
In addition to its intended clinical effects, Apo-Ipravent Nasal Spray (Ipratropium bromide) into the nose can also trigger the occurrence of side effects, and some of these are listed here:
Even mild side effects need to be reported to the physician, and patients may be required to regularly see their physician to assess whether or not the medicine is having its desired effects.
Although said to be a considerably less common occurrence, serious side effects have been reported. The attention of a physician will be needed immediately if the patient suffers from urinary symptoms, soreness affecting the eyes, visual interferences or any other severe symptoms that have not been referenced in this paragraph.
Apo-Ipravent Nasal Spray (Ipratropium bromide) is an anticholinergic medicine, and physicians may need to consider the suitability of it for patients suffering from glaucoma, bladder problems or prostatic hyperplasia.
This spray should only be used in the nose as your physician directs. Do not spray it in the eyes and never ingest it, as accidental oral administration could lead to serious health problems.
