Albaquin Cream (Monobenzone) is used to treat a skin disease called vitiligo. Patients suffering from this condition may notice white patches (known as vitiliginous lesions) appearing on different areas of the body (such as the face, wrists and hands). In serious cases large areas of skin may be affected by depigmentation. These symptoms are caused by the cells that form pigments (known as melanocytes) being destroyed.
This topical cream is used to lighten the skin that is not affected by vitiligo by causing the permanent removal of color, thereby helping to even out the skin color. However, it is very important to note that this cream is not a mild cosmetic lightening agent or skin bleach, as its effects are permanent, and because of this it may not be suitable for skin conditions other than vitiligo.
If your physician has recommended the use of a skin lightening agent such as Albaquin Cream (Monobenzone) for the treatment of vitiligo, it is essential that all instructions are followed, as depigmentation treatment requires careful usein order to protect other areas of the skin from discoloration. Most adult patients will be instructed by their physician to apply the cream 2 to 3 times per day, after which it should be gently rubbed into the skin. It usually takes 4 months of treatment for depigmentation to occur, and after this 4 month period has passed, your physician may instruct you to use it twice per week.
Patients using Albaquin Cream (Monobenzone) for vitiligo may experience some side effects, such as:
Report any side effects to your physician. If any of the side effects listed above are serious, or if you notice any other severe reactions, consult your physician straight away.
This cream should only be used under the close supervision of a physician, and should not be used for sun spots, freckles, discolored skin caused by medication, melanoma, skin trauma or other skin conditions, as it may cause permanent skin discoloration or damage.
Do not apply the cream to areas near to the eye, and avoid allowing it to get into the eye. Do not ingest it either, as this could be dangerous. It is only for use on the skin.
